Neverwinter became a safe haven for many in the tumultuous years following the Spellplague. The city expanded eastward along the river, including the new River District, which became home to the city’s burgeoning merchant class. The eruption of Mount Hotenow in the Year of Knowledge Unearthed (419 NR, 1451 DR), however, destroyed most of the district. Since then, an orcish expedition from Many Arrows has taken up residence, claiming all the land east of the Fallen Tower. They seem to at least keep out the wandering beasts and monsters that had previously roamed the ruins.
So far, New Neverwinter has shown little success in ousting the orcs, though they clearly have other problems to focus on in the Blacklake District and the Chasm. For now, a barricade separates Blacklake and the River District. It is rarely manned, but a number of warnings are posted to keep people from venturing into the ruined section of the city. The relative privacy makes discreet liasons and daredevil games frequent occurrences, though, leaving stern parents to caution youngbloods with a thirst for adventure from going in, and sometimes spending valuable gold to hire adventurers to go rescue them when they ignore those warnings.
