Mount Hotenow

At the terminus of the Crags, deep in Neverwinter Wood, rises Mount Hotenow. The volcano’s eruption in the Year of Knowledge Unearthed (419 NR, 1451 DR) was a cataclysm for the city of Neverwinter from which it is still struggling to rebuild. Mount Hotenow has not had a major eruption in the twenty-eight years since then, but there are a number of areas around the mountain where lava continues to flow slowly, preventing its once-forested slopes from regrowing.

Mount Hotenow is the home and holy place of the Fires Below, a cult of fire elements and associated beings that worship Maegera the Inferno. They believe that Mount Hotenow is the primordial’s prison, and that its magma comes not from Toril’s mantle, but from the primordial locked within it. They seek to release him. If the catastrophe 28 years ago was the result of Maegera merely stirring, then the elementals succeeding in releasing him could be a disaster for the whole North.
