For much of the North’s history, orcs feared the “ haunted woods” of Neverwinter. Centuries of failed raids into the forest had started legends among them, and they had long given the woods a wide berth. The cataclysm in Neverwinter ruptured many of those old myths, though, and in the past decades the orcs have returned to plague the area.
The orc kingdom of Many Arrows lies far to the north, but the situation has clearly tempted them to expand southwards. A reconnaisance expedition sent to test the forest’s boundaries came under the sway of the Abolethic Sovereignty, and under their command entered the city and seized control of the River District, using the old Cloak Tower as their headquarters. Dagult Neverember was not able to remove them, and instead tried to parley with them. When the Northern Five destroyed the Source Stone in the Chasm, Ghorn the Sly took advantage of the situation to slay the aboleth-controlled leader of the expedition, Vansi Bloodscar. Under Ghorn’s command, the rogue expedition left the River District to return to their northern kingdom. Instead, the orcs have an ambassador in Neverwinter, Ghorn’s friend Orrusk the Old, who is working to set up a trade presence in the city.
